Privacy and classroom rules
Classes are built to hold as little as possible about students. Here is all of it.
What we store
- Teachers: an email address (to sign in), a display name, and a password stored as a one-way hash.
- Students: a nickname and a student code stored as a one-way hash. No email, no real name, no password, no age, no school.
- Answers in lessons, for students in a class: the first try on each quiz question, the first agree or disagree pick on each opening statement, written answers the student chose to send, "done" marks and stuck notes.
To slow down password guessing, sign-in and join attempts are counted per connection using a one-way hash of the IP address. Those counters are deleted within a day. The site counts page visits with Plausible, which sets no cookies.
Who can see it
Only the class's teacher sees student nicknames and answers. Room view shows answers without names. Nothing is sold, shared or used for advertising, and no AI model reads student work.
How long it's kept
- A teacher can remove a student, delete a class, or delete their whole account at any time; it is deleted at once.
- A class with no activity for about 13 months is deleted automatically.
- A student who "leaves" a class on a device signs that device out; their answers stay with the teacher until the teacher removes them.
Rules for teachers
- Ask students to use a nickname or first name, never a full name or anything else that identifies them.
- Follow your school's or district's rules for online tools. If your district requires approval or a data agreement, get it first.
- For students under 13, make the roster yourself (Students tab) rather than letting them sign up, and follow your school's guidance on parental notice.
- Use classes for teaching. Don't use nicknames or answers to contact students outside class.
Questions or problems
Get in touch. If you think a class is being misused, tell us and we'll look at it.
